Description
SCOPE believes that current trend of environmental degradation can be reversed if people are educated,
communities are organized and empowered, experts are involved in sustainable development
thinking, Governments are made committed to eradicate poverty and corporate sector is made responsible.
SCOPE also believes that there are enough resources on the globe, which can be shared
on equitable basis.
United Nations landmark conferences on environment and development, (Stockholm 1972, Rio 1992 and Johannesburg
2002), recognized the need of an uncompromising approach towards
economic development, without scarifying environment and natural resources. This concept is called Sustainable
Development (SD).
These conferences resulted in global road map of sustainable development, which comprises on Agenda
21, Rio declaration on sustainable development, different conventions on biodiversity, climate
change, combating Desertification, and organic pollutants. Recently in Johannesburg, the UN did 10 years
assessment of the implementation of this global environmental agenda and came up with
Millennium Sustainable Development Goals.
These global commitments are supposed to be percolated at national and then local levels for implementation,
because environment is primarily a local issue and concerned with local populations.
